BMW 5 Series review

From £39,270

The 5 Series is a quality machine and yet another step on from models of old. Being brilliant to drive is the icing on the cake.

  • BMW 5 Series
  • For: Premium feel, latest tech, brilliant to drive
  • Against: Can get expensive
  • Verdict: Probably the best executive car in the world

The current BMW 5 Series went on sale in 2017 and uses a platform shared with the flagship 7 Series.

It also shares much of its technology, including semi-autonomous driving systems and new touchscreen infotainment with gesture control. It’s beautifully built, with a reassuring sense of solidity and user-friendly tech.

The range kicks off with the SE at around £39,500, but we’ll bet none will leave the showroom for less than £40,000.

On the plus side, the SE is loaded with standard equipment, while M Sport trim offers a sportier appearance – and a firmer ride.

The 520d, powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, is the most popular model in the UK. Four-wheel-drive xDrive versions are  available, while the 530e plug-in hybrid offers low CO2 emissions and an electric range of up to 35 miles.

Overall, the 5 Series is a quality machine and a big step on from models of old. Being brilliant to drive is the icing on the cake.
