Audi A5 review

From £38,080

If you’re prepared to sacrifice a little practicality for sleeker styling, the Audi A5 is one of the best looking cars in its class.

  • Audi A5
  • For: Styling, build quality, classy interior
  • Against: A4 saloon is better value, lacks excitement
  • Verdict: A very stylish and comfortable cruiser

Consider the sharp-suited Audi A5 a more aspirational alternative to the A4 saloon.

If you’re prepared to forgo a little practicality in return for head-turning styling – and a higher price – the A5 is one of the best looking cars in its class.

There are three versions offered: the two-door A5 Coupe, five-door A5 Sportback and two-door A5 Cabriolet.

The Coupe and Sportback are also available in sporty RS5 guise, complete with a 450hp 2.9-litre petrol engine – good for 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds. For around £70,000, it’s a fully-fledged rival for the BMW M3.

Back in the real world, the A5 boasts a high quality cabin, punchy and efficient engines and a usefully sized boot. Quattro four-wheel drive is available on some models, too.

The problem is, it costs more than the Audi A4, is a little cramped in the rear and is rather dull to drive. Even the RS5 isn’t as exciting as you’d hope.

Still for long-distance cruising in style, the Audi A5 is hard to beat.
