Audi A1 review

From £19,495

Overall, this latest Audi A1 is bigger, better and more refined than its predecessor, and it remains one of the most desirable cars in its class

  • Audi A1
  • For: Standard kit, personalisation options, big car feel
  • Against: Expensive, interior quality, no diesel option
  • Verdict: Supermini that’s high on tech and kerb appeal

Nobody does option packs quite like Audi. Spend a few minutes playing with the A1 configurator and you won’t struggle to spend £30,000.

That’s a lot of money for a car closely related to the Volkswagen Polo and Seat Ibiza.

However, the four-ring badge is hot property, and the A1 is perfectly pitched for image-conscious buyers – with standard LED headlights, dynamic rear indicators and a digital cockpit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

There’s an array of three- and four-cylinder petrol engines, including a 200hp version. All are efficient, but there’s no diesel. Audi reckons the market isn’t there.

Predictably, the interior is superb, with genuine wow-factor that’s rare in the supermini segment. Some of the plastics feel cheap, which makes it harder to justify the price of the more expensive versions, but gloss is added by the range of personalisation options.

This latest A1 remains one of the most desirable cars in its class.
