All models also now get LED daytime running lights, chrome strip between the headlights, indicators built into the door mirrors and remote central locking.

Despite these new additions, prices will stay the same.

Up to GTI pace

The new engine is a 1.0 TSI turbocharged direct injection three-cylinder petrol which develops 90hp and goes from 0-60mph in 10.0 seconds, which VW claims matches the driving performance of the Mk1 Golf GTI.

You can spot it by this model being the only Up with an exposed exhaust tailpipe.

Despite the impressive performance figures, it also returns an economical 64mpg and (claims 102g/km of CO2) which will enable the Up to cover up to 500 miles on a single tank of fuel.

This engine compliments the existing non-turbo 1.0 three-cylinder units in 60hp and 75hp form.

The system works by connecting your smart phone via Bluetooth to the dashpad and, thanks to the VW app, it enables the phone to be the infotainment system complete with navigational systems and on-board computer functions.

VW has put more emphasis on individualisation and the new Up complements the extra new body colours extra interior colours, plus coloured alloy wheels and individualised-colour ambient interior lights for top of the range models.

The revised Up will be available from late summer 2016.
