The new 218i will use the 1.5-litre TwinPower Turbo motor from the petrol-powered Cooper, boasting the same 136hp power output.
It will average up to 55mpg and do 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds; more significantly, 162lb ft of torque delivered from just 1,250rpm will give it grunty pulling power beyond its diminutive-sounding capacity.
Of course, the 1.5-litre three-pot engine is also shared with the BMW i8 supercar, granting 218i drivers immediate added kudos in pub bar boasts…
Following its launch in the 2 Series range, the new 218i’s TwinPower Turbo engine is expected to following in the 1 Series, possibly coinciding with a facelift mooted for some time in 2015.
2 Series xDrive
BMW’s also introducing a four-wheel drive 220d xDrive Coupe. The 190hp diesel uses the additional traction to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 6.8 seconds, while averaging up to 65mpg.
It’s yet further expansion of the four-wheel drive BMW technology, which is quickly becoming a popular choice for those who need guaranteed all-weather traction.
Indeed, BMW’s xDrive system is, in the UK, actually outselling Audi’s famous quattro running gear…
Both new 2 Series Coupes will be available to order early in 2015, with prices to be announced in the New Year.
