Volvo has released yet another teaser for the all-new XC90 that’s due to be fully revealed at the end of August – revealing its fantastically-named ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights.
The headlights have been dubbed Thor’s Hammer by the Volvo design team, naming the design after, yes, the hammer used by Thor, Norse god of thunder.
“Anyone who looks in their rear-view mirror is going to know immediately that there is a new XC90 behind them,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design of Volvo Car Group.
“The XC90 is a car that has presence on the road.”
Its headlights certainly do, that’s for certain. But Volvo says the flexibility afforded by the XC90 using the firm’s new Scalable Product Architecture means it’s promising the new XC90 moves the game on in terms of luxury, space, versatility, efficiency and safety, just as the original did back in 2002.
90% of the components in the new XC90 are just that – all-new – and Volvo’s quite clear on its aspirations for the new car: moving to “they very top of the premium league”.
As such, it’s fitting that the Thor headlights are so boldly named when you look at the investment that’s going into the XC90, the SPA platform and other Volvo products to filter off it: no less than $11 billion, as part of the firm’s transformation plan.
Volvo is getting serious and the XC90 is the first and possibly the most important piece in this new plan. It’s crucial the firm gets it all right: Volvo’s very future success is staked on it. We’ll find out how big a storm it creates later this month.
