The new 540C is a slightly softer alternative to the focused 570S: as its name suggests, it has 540hp, good for a 199mph top speed and 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds.
The 570S can break the 200mph barrier and does 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds.
McLaren says the 540C ‘completes’ the two-car Sport Series line-up: at £126,000, it goes head-to-head with the Porsche 911 Turbo (which costs £120,598), leaving the £143,250 570S to challenge the 911 Turbo S (priced at £142,120).

The 540C has a slightly different aero pack to the 570S, and boasts its own unique alloy wheel design. The differences are subtle, though, and the two cars will be indistinguishable to most.
Both share the same striking dihedral doors with integrated air intakes, and both also have the distinctive flying buttresses at the rear.
On the road, McLaren says the suspension is more comfortable and refined than the racy 570S, and the 19-inch front and 20-inch rear Pirelli P Zero tyres have been specially developed.
Pre-orders are now underway, added the firm, with deliveries beginning in early 2016.
McLaren will also, it’s confirmed, sell the 540C Coupe in every major market – that’s more than 30 countries – so it will be coming to Europe and the UK. The previous ‘comfort’ McLaren, the 625C, was restricted to Asian markets.
Land Rover has produced its 6 millionth car and is showing the landmark model, a Range Rover, at the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show.
The milestone car is a Range Rover LWB Vogue SE which was built on April 2, 2015: it’s been fitted with a special puddle lamp graphic unique to this Yulong White vehicle.
Andy Goss, JLR group sales operations director, said: “For 67 years Land Rover has been building the world’s most capable all-purpose vehicles.
“It’s fitting that the 6,000,000th Land Rover to be produced is a Range Rover, since this year marks the 45th anniversary of the original Range Rover’s launch and even today, the vehicle remains peerless.”
The 6 millionth Land Rover is going to be staying in China too, he added. “With the growth of sales in China since the latest version of the Range Rover was introduced in 2012, it is entirely appropriate that this landmark vehicle is destined for a Chinese customer.”
