Range Rover Sport gets 2.0-litre diesel for 2017

2017 Range Rover SportThe 2017 Range Rover Sport model year will introduce a new 2.0-litre Ingenium turbodiesel variant, the first time a four-cylinder engine has been offered on the strong-selling luxury SUV.

Land Rover says the Range Rover Sport 2.0-litre SD4 Ingenium will be the most efficient model variant ever, returning 45.6 mpg and emitting 164 g/km CO2.

Crucially, it’s a new version of the Ingenium diesel Land Rover’s launching in the Range Rover Sport – a 240 hp SD4 with two turbochargers. It’s JLR’s first self-built engine to feature series sequential turbos; we can expect to see it subsequently roll out in hot diesel Jaguar XE and XF models.

Not that the four-pot Range Rover Sport will shout about what’s under the bonnet, despite producing a hefty 368 lb-ft of torque (and 0-60 mph in 8.0 seconds):  the sole differentiator will be a single twin-exhaust at the rear, rather than the dual exhausts either side of the rear bumper seen on other engine variants.

Oh, and a price cut: the downsized engine brings a sub-£60,000 price tag, with the range starting at £59,700 for the 2.0-litre SD4 HSE.

HSE Dynamic, Autobiography Dynamic and SVR variants will also be offered, with the range topping at £96,900 for the 550 hp SVR. Sales start winter 2016.

For those who can’t do with fewer than six cylinders, Land Rover is also introducing a new petrol option, the 3.0-litre V6 supercharged motor from the Jaguar F-Type. This produces 340 hp for 0-60mph in 7.1 seconds, but you’ll pay for it at the pumps: combined economy is just 26.9 mpg.

But then, it does cost £64,600, £4,100 less than the comparable 3.0 SDV6 HSE Dynamic diesel variant (this diesel averages 40.4mpg).
