“We closed the order books for the 918 Spyder a few days ago,” board member for sales and marketing Bernhard Maier announced in LA. “All are now sold out – and we’re able to confirm that of the 918 cars built, 297 of them are US-bound.”
Such large numbers show how important the US market remains to Porsche, said Maier: “North America is our second home, and we still sell more cars here than in any other market.
“There are more Porsche sports cars here than anywhere else in the world.”
Finally being able to announce the 918 Spyder is sold out may be a relief to Porsche: production of the hypercar began in September 2013 and the flagship Porsche has taken longer to sell out than its supercar rivals the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1.
Greater volumes are the reason though: McLaren built just 375 P1 and Ferrari limited LaFerrari to 499 units.
And it seems that even though the 918 Spyder has sold out, potential customers remain undeterred. “The waiting list is still growing!” said Maier.
It seems Porsche’s next challenge will thus be how to break the news to those who are still waiting in line…
