Eco-conscious Audi fans can guarantee they’re the first in line to take delivery of the firm’s upcoming new E-Tron electric SUV by placing a £1,000 deposit for priority access to the new EV that’s due later in 2018.
In a move similar to Elon Musk’s Tesla Model 3 stunt (which saw over 400,000 people place $1,000 deposits), Audi will take deposits either online, or in person via one of its 116 UK dealers.
For their £1,000, buyers will be enrolled into a ‘Priority Order Members Club’. This will firm up their front-of-queue status, and also grant them access to special preview events and club competitions.
Want, for example, to be in with a shot of winning tickets to the invitation-only Audi Polo Challenge this summer? Put your deposit down for the new E-Tron…
Priority Order Members Club, er, members will also be the first to hear how much the Audi E-Tron EV SUV will actually cost, when the priority ordering system is activated. The firm will email them with final prices and UK specs, so they can get their exact order in as soon as possible.
For those who are eager but then get cold feet, the £1,000 deposit is fully refundable – and Audi says it will be offset against the final purchase price.
The new five-seat E-Tron SUV is Audi’s immediate response to the Jaguar I-Pace revealed at this year’s Geneva Motor Show (indeed, some say Audi’s decision to reveal the camouflaged E-Tron was its way of gatecrashing the I-Pace’s launch party…).
The electric driving range will be “favourably comparable with a conventionally powered equivalent” and it will have fast-charge capabilities to top it back up to 80 percent charge in less than half an hour.
Naturally, it will be all-wheel drive, courtesy of Audi’s new e-quattro drivetrain – and the ‘MEB’ platform it’s being built on will eventually spawn more than 20 EVs and plug-in hybrids by 2025.
