Porsche will give its new 83.1mpg Cayenne S E-Hybrid plug-in hybrid SUV its world debut at the Paris Motor Show 2014 prior to UK deliveries beginning in early 2015.
The addition of the plug-in petrol-electric hybrid Cayenne means Porsche becomes the world’s only car manufacturer to offer three separate plug-in hybrid models (Cayenne, Panamera and, yes, 918 Spyder). And not one of them returns less than 83mpg on the official cycle.
Quite a feat for a sports car manufacturer.
The Cayenne S E-Hybrid pairs a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine with an electric motor for, in parallel hybrid drive, 416hp and 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds. It also, albeit not concurrently, emits just 79g/km CO2 – the same as the Panamera S E-Hybrid.
On sale in UK Porsche dealers now, it doesn’t even cost the earth: impressively, the list price matches the Cayenne S Diesel at £61,474.
Porsche’s ultra-green new SUV
Such low CO2 and fuel consumption figures makes the Cayenne S E-Hybrid one of the greenest SUVs in the world. Only models such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV beat it (and the Cayenne is a little bit faster, sportier and more luxurious than the Mitsub).
The firm thus expects uptake to be strong. Last year, for example, it delivered 16,698 Panamera, of which 1513 were Panamera S E-Hybrids. That’s a 9 per cent share: Porsche expects the Cayenne split to be similar.
And last year, Porsche delivered more than 84,000 Cayenne…
The firm will also showcase the rest of the facelifted Cayenne range at the Paris Motors Show 2014, from which Motoring Research will be reporting in force from Wednesday 1 October.
