Operation Stack truckers given free water by council

Kent County Council has today earned praise from truckers and hauliers after handing out vital supplies of bottled water to truckers caught in the M20 Operation Stack queues.

This morning, lorry drivers have been given water by Kent County Council workers, as the south east prepares for the onset of a heatwave.

The council also handed out snacks to hungry truckers.

Tweeter @youareparsons was one beneficiary early this morning:

French industrial action has closed the port at Calais until Thursday 2 July, which means truckers heading to Dover are currently queuing on the M20 as part of Operation Stack.

This is a system of queuing lorries on the M20, rather than having them cause gridlock on the rest of the Kent road network.

There are three phases:

  • Phase 1: coast-bound from junction 11-12
  • Phase 2: coast-bound from junction 8-9
  • Phase 3: London-bound from junction 9-8

The M20 motorway is currently closed between junctions 8-9 under phases 2 and 3 of the plan and trucks are lined up in a queue. When they reach the front of it, they are given a ticket allowing them to travel to the continent.

Normal traffic conditions are expected from later on Thursday, although that’s dependent on French industrial action.

And the heatwave weather? That’s also expected to temporarily fade on Thursday, before returning once again for the weekend.
