November 2013 new car registrations UP 7%

Lotus

SMMT data has revealed new car registrations grew once again in November with 159,581 new cars taking to British roads.

This means more cars have been sold year to date in 2013 than in the whole of 2012 – and the market is on to record 2.25 million new car registrations overall.

Ford remained at the top of the chart with the Fiesta and Focus, followed by the Vauxhall Astra and Corsa. The Volkswagen Golf pipped the Vauxhall Insignia, and the Nissan Qashqai proved imminent replacement is no barrier to strong sales in seventh place.

Look to the winning and losing brands though, and some eye-opening trends are revealed. Proton sold ZERO cars last month, for example, which is what led to our blog post earlier in the week. Perodua fared little better, selling just three cars.

More surprising is to see Infiniti sales fall 63%, from 55 cars to just 20. Smart sales also fell 40%, from 553 to 329.

We know Chevrolet is withdrawing, so a fall of 23% perhaps shouldn’t be too surprising… more noteworthy is the fact Japanese giant (and UK manufacturer) Toyota suffered a heavy 24% sales decline, from 6346 cars to 4812.

In November, Toyota was smaller than Hyundai and Kia.

At the other end of the table, it’s cheers at Lotus with a fantastic 2300% boost in registrations from a paltry ONE car in 2012 to 24 last month. MG was up 257% and Subaru was up 139%.

More representative are the gains of Suzuki, Mazda and Fiat, given the larger numbers involved: they were up 58%, 53% and 53% respectively.

Vauxhall got one over arch-rival Ford too: its sales grew 7.7%, whereas Ford declined 0.6%. There were just 1358 cars between them – maybe there’s something in MD Duncan Aldred’s assertion that Vauxhall can become the biggest car manufacturer in the UK?
