Toyota RAV4 Hybrid in 2015 New York Motor Show reveal

Toyota RAV4 HybridToyota has announced the first-ever hybrid version of the RAV4 compact SUV will make its debut at the 2015 New York Motor Show.

The firm isn’t saying any more at this stage, other than confirming the model will be a 2016 production car, and that it’ll be revealed at 17h30 GMT on 2 April in New York.

As the Lexus NX 300h is derived from the RAV4, it’s possible the RAV4 Hybrid could use the same 2.5-litre petrol-electric drivetrain.

Toyota could, however, choose to lower the entry price by using a version of the Auris and Prius’ 1.8-litre petrol electric setup. This also makes a plug-in version with added battery capacity possible.

The teaser images doesn’t give much away, other than confirming it will largely be derived from the current petrol and diesel cars, albeit with new tail lamps (likely to be part of a mild facelift for the rest of the RAV4 range). Also note the blue-tinted Toyota badges.

The news of Toyota’s new RAV4 Hybrid comes as the firm’s UK arm steps up a campaign against diesel models, alleging that driving them is more anti-social than smoking.
