Classic Mini Electric charges into New York

Classic Mini Electric at NYIAS 2018Mini is getting us excited for the idea of its new 2019 pure electric car… by revealing a classic Mini converted to run on electric at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

This is no early April Fool’s joke, either. Mini’s serous, and says it’s converted the classic Mini partly to prepare us for the car’s 60th anniversary next year. Presumably, so old and new electric Minis can be shown off together.

The new car, based on the Mini Hatch three-door, is currently in final development. Plant Oxford is being readied to start building it. And Mini reminds us it won’t be the first electric model to go into production – the 2008 Mini helped prove a lot of the tech that went into the BMW i3; the firm ended up building around 600 of them.

Classic Mini Electric at NYIAS 2018

It’s only going to build one classic Mini Electric. The New York model is derived from a fully-restored late-model classic Mini Cooper, and wears red paint set off with a white roof and bonnet stripes.

The soon-to-be-familiar Mini Electric logo adorns the bonnet, rear quarters and the wheel hubs. Even the fuel filler is retained, albeit converted to take an electric charging socket.

Its ultra-light weight pays dividends on the road, says Mini. “The spontaneous power of its electric motor provides a new dimension to the unmistakable go-kart feeling that helped propel the British small car in its original form to worldwide popularity.”

Not that we’ll get to drive it at New York, sadly. “With this unique vehicle,” says the firm, “Mini sends out a clear signal demonstrating its commitment to retaining the brand’s unmistakable character whilst embracing innovative zero local emission technology.”

We get the idea. The 2019 Mini Electric will be a real Mini. And what better way to underline this than by showing a real Mini, made electric.

New Jaguar F-Pace SVR

New Jaguar F-Pace SVRThey’ve finally done it. Jaguar’s petrolhead engineers have dropped the firm’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 into the F-Pace SUV. In doing so, they’ve created an ultra-potent, ultra-desirable homegrown answer to a Mercedes-AMG GLC. At last.

The F-Pace SVR debuts at the New York International Auto Show. All 550hp of it, which is enough to take the mid-size premium SUV from 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds, and onto a 176mph top speed. There’s also 501lb ft of pulling power: in all, a 44 percent hike in output compared to the four-cylinder and V6 F-Pace models we’ve had up to now.

Because it’s the work of JLR’s hot Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division, there’s a suitably standout visual makeover to go with all this power. An all-new front bumper has been scalloped out to feed in air, and there are vents in the sides of the wings to further aid cooling and reduce lift.

Another front-end feature are the new SVR bonnet vents, which look mean (they’ll be your instant F-Pace SVR differentiator) but are also functional, helping air heated by the V8 to escape.

New wheelarch extensions wrap around either 21-inch or 22-inch alloys, and there are meatier lower body mouldings and, of course, a whopping great four-pipe exhaust at the rear, complete with the Jaguar Variable Valve Active Exhaust System. Interestingly, this higher-performance system weighs 6.6kg less than the standard setup. Note the enlarged rear spoiler as well.

It’s not all for show, either. “The F-Pace SVR delivers the handling and agility to match its performance,” says JLR handling guru Mike Cross. Spring rates are up, by a hefty 30 percent at the front, and a new anti-roll bar cuts body lean by five percent in corners.

The lightweight forged alloys wear tyres 25mm wider at the rear than the front, and the 22-inch rims are up to 2.4kg lighter than normal. Hiding behind them is a performance brake system with two-piece discs that are 395mm in diameter on the front, 396mm at the rear.

Jaguar has fitted its rear electronic active differential to the F-Pace for the first time. This has been honed for the SVR – indeed, said Cross, “everything from the steering to the bespoke suspension set-up has been tuned specifically for our performance SUV”.

Inside, there are slimline front sports seats that look like they’ve been taken straight from the F-Type. Who knows, maybe they have – and they’re matched by two more in the rear. They’re SVR-branded, as is the steering wheel, and the paddle shifters are cool aluminium metal. There’s a choice of four interior colour schemes as well.

Prices start from £74,835 in the UK and ordering will open in May. Want to be the first in line? In the usual Jaguar way, head to the firm’s website and register your interest. Bosses tell us this really is worth doing – the people at the front of the queue generally do this as early as possible…

As the last big show of the international season, this is a chance for manufacturers to showcase any new metal that might be left in the cupboard, as well as springing a surprise or two. Read on to see the hottest new cars in New York.

Cadillac XT4

You’ll have worked out by now that life isn’t always fair, so while you really fancy a Cadillac ATS-V coupe or CTS-V saloon, you’re more likely to end up behind the wheel of an XT4. It’s the latest in a seemingly never-ending line of compact crossovers, which slots in below the XT5 in Cadillac’s range of crossovers and SUVs. The front- or all-wheel-drive XT4 is powered by a new 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine developing 235hp, which is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It fills a massive hole in the Caddy range and goes head-to-head with the likes of the Volvo XC40, Jaguar E-Pace and BMW X3.

Kia K900

This is the second-generation Kia K900, with the saloon treated to a comprehensive overhaul for its New York debut. It’s longer and wider than before, with a rear end that isn’t too dissimilar to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The front and rear overhangs are shorter, pushing the wheels further out to the corners of the car to create a larger cabin. The dashboard is dominated by a 12.3-inch screen, which is accompanied by an analogue clock developed by Maurice Lacroix. The Korean-built K900 will go on sale from the second quarter of 2018, but is unlikely to be sold in the UK.

Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 – that’s ‘Recreational Active Vehicle with 4WD’ – arrived in the UK in 1994, with Toyota aiming it at “those with active lifestyles, a sense of fun and who want to be a just a little different.” Back then, a crossover was a leftfield choice, which is in stark contrast to the car industry of today. This is the fifth-generation RAV4 and, while it might have lost its sense of fun, it remains one of the most popular cars in the world. Last year, some 770,000 RAV4s found a home, making it the sixth best-selling car on the planet.

Subaru Forester

Speaking of best-sellers… While the Subaru Forester might hold niche appeal in the UK, it’s actually a strong seller in the US and accounts for 25 percent of the firm’s overall production. This is a much sharper Forester than before (the old car is pictured), with a look that draws heavily from the Viziv concept of 2015. There’s no word on the specs for the UK-bound Forester, but there are rumours Subaru will drop the diesel engine and manual gearbox.

Volkswagen five-seat SUV

This is a five-seat SUV concept based on the seven-seat Volkswagen Atlas, but don’t get too excited because it’s not coming to the UK. Like the Atlas the as-yet-unnamed concept is designed and engineered for the American market and will be the third VW model to be assembled at the Chattanooga factory.

The updated Mercedes-Benz C-Class saloon and estate made their debut at the Geneva Motor Show, now it’s the turn of the coupe and cabriolet. Scheduled to go on sale in the US by late 2018, the 2018 models feature new front and rear ends, standard-fit LED headlights, a larger media display as standard, and a range of new alloy wheels and colours. UK buyers won’t have as long to wait, as the coupe and cabriolet will go on sale in April, with first deliveries in July. All UK-spec cars will feature sports suspension as standard.

Fresh from its reveal in Geneva, the BMW X4 is set for its North American debut, this time in M40i guise. It’s powered by the same six-cylinder engine you’ll find in the more practical X3 M40i, meaning 355hp and 365lb ft of torque. The new M40i – which features a wider track and a lower centre of gravity – will hit 60mph in 4.6 seconds.

Remember that Cadillac XT4 from earlier? To paraphrase Chris Tarrant, we really don’t want to give you that. This is the new CT6 V-Sport: the first ever V-Performance version of Cadillac’s flagship saloon. It’s powered by an all-new 4.2-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which develops 550hp and 627lb ft of torque to deliver what we’d expect to be outstanding performance figures. “With its lightweight architecture, an all-new Cadillac Twin Turbo V8 coupled with the tightened suspension and revised AWD torque split, we’ve enhanced the CT6 to be well-balanced and capable of all conditions,” said Lyndon Lie, CT6 chief engineer.

Hyundai Kona Electric

Americans will have to wait a while before they can get their hands on the Hyundai Kona Electric – it will launch in Europe first – but we expect the Korean EV to give the Chevrolet Bolt a run for its money. In the UK, you can expect to pay around £25,000 before government grants for the Kona Electric, which sounds like great value for an EV with up to 186 miles of range and a five-year warranty.

Ford Fusion

The Ford Fusion (Mondeo in the UK) is the first Ford vehicle to be equipped with the new Co-Pilot360 driver-assist technology, which includes emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot information, lane-keeping assist, rear camera and auto high-beam. Meanwhile, the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid model has been tweaked to deliver an electric-only range of up to 25 miles – nearly 20 percent greater than the current model. A small number of minor cosmetic upgrades and a suite of new colours complete the updates for the 2019 Fusion.

GMC Sierra AT4

Unveiled in New York City, ahead of the motor show, the GMC Sierra AT4 is “designed for the customer who wants an elevated presence on the road and the capability to venture off life’s beaten path,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC. It’s also the pick-up for those who can resist the lure of the all-conquering Ford F-150. It rides two inches higher than the regular Sierra, and comes with standard features such as four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case, locking rear differentials and skid plates. Power is sourced from a 5.3-litre V8, although 6.2-litre V8 petrol and 3.0-litre turbodiesel options are available.

Jaguar I-Pace

Both the XK120 and E-Type made their North American debuts at the New York Auto Show, and now it’s the turn of the production version of the Jaguar I-Pace. Boasting 349hp and 512lb ft of torque from its twin electric motors, the I-Pace takes just 4.5 seconds to accelerate to 60mph, while its 90kWh battery can deliver up to 240 miles of range. In the US, the I-Pace will cost from $69,500.

Range Rover SV Coupe

Also making its North American debut, the SV Coupe is the fastest and most exclusive full-size Range Rover ever. Just 999 will be made, each priced from £240,000 in the UK or $295,000 in the US. Its 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine develops 557hp and 516lb ft of torque, enabling the luxury SUV to hit 62mph in 4.5 seconds and 176mph flat-out.

Nissan Altima

The all-new sixth generation Nissan Altima is here, but all we have ahead of its reveal is this teaser sketch. What else do we know about Nissan’s mid-size saloon? Well, it’ll feature the same ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous technology found on the Nissan Leaf and is expected to be larger than the outgoing Altima.

Toyota Corolla

Wait, don’t skip to the next slide, because the new Toyota Corolla is quite exciting. For a start, it’s powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which is rather refreshing in a world of downsizing. It’s also offered with a six-speed manual gearbox and features a revised sport-tuned suspension. We think it looks rather good.

Yes, yes, yes… the XC90, XC60 and XC40 SUVs are all well and good, but where would Volvo be without a good looking wagon? And few estate cars are as alluring as the new Volvo V60, which makes its North American debut in New York. In the US, the V60 will be available with a T5 front-wheel-drive powertrain with 250hp or T6 all-wheel-drive with 316hp.

Lincoln Aviator

The last Lincoln Aviator rolled off the production line in 2005 following years of disappointing sales. But now the mid-size luxury SUV is back, although Lincoln is giving nothing away. We do know that it will be based on the Ford Explorer platform and will come with an electrified powertrain option.

Acura RDX

The third-generation RDX has been designed and developed in America for the first time and is being billed as the “most extensive Acura redesign in more than a decade. The 2019 RDX marks the return of the Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) to the line-up and pairs it with a new 2.0-litre VTEC turbocharged engine and a segment-first 10-speed transmission. The A-Spec variant (pictured) looks particularly interesting.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The Santa Fe is the best-selling SUV in Hyundai’s 32-year history in the US, with more than 1.5 million units sold. We’ve seen the 2019 Santa Fe before – first in Seoul, then in Geneva – but the importance of the North American market shouldn’t be underestimated. Three engines will be available in the US: 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre petrol units and a 2.2-litre diesel. Seven seats are available in the Santa Fe XL.

For the first time in its history, Volvo has three SUVs in its range, including the XC40. The compact SUV makes its North American debut in lavish Inscription trim, “offering unique features and an expanded list of standard equipment that is uncommon in the compact premium SUV market.” Given the success of the XC90 and XC60 in North America, we reckon the XC40 will be incredibly popular in the US.

Bugatti Chiron Sport

Following its reveal at the Geneva Motor Show, the Bugatti Chiron Sport is making its North American debut in New York. The power and performance figures are unchanged – like anyone needs more than 1,500hp – but the Sport tips the scales 18kg lighter than the ‘standard’ Chiron. Bugatti claims that the Sport can lap the Nardo handling circuit a full five seconds faster than the Chiron. The North American market is the second strongest region for Bugatti, after Europe.

It’s a busy year for Infiniti, with the new QX60 and QX80 following the launch of the QX50 premium crossover. The QX60 is Infiniti’s best-selling SUV, with the 2019 model featuring a host of cosmetic upgrades, custom 20-inch alloy wheels, stone-coloured leather seats and a suite of safety and security features.

The Infiniti QX80 is even larger and more luxurious, with a range of options befitting its role as the brand’s flagship SUV. Options include dark machine-finished 22-inch wheels, matte silver open-pore wood trim, illuminated kick plates and Ultrasuede headliner. Power is sourced from a 400hp 5.6-litre V8 engine.

Audi A6

The new Audi A6 features the same infotainment system that debuted in the new A8 and A7, with the MMI touch control replacing the rotary dial and conventional buttons of the previous model. A 48-volt mild-hybrid system will be fitted as standard across the range, reducing CO2 emissions by 10g/km.

The new Mercedes-AMG C43 coupe and cabriolet models are powered by a 3.0-litre V6 engine, which now delivers 385hp, 23hp more than before. It means that the coupe can accelerate to 60mph in 4.5 seconds, while the cabriolet completes the sprint in 4.6 seconds. Other changes include styling tweaks, interior upgrades, and more personalisation options.

Lexus RC F Sport Black Line

Available on all RC 300 and RC 350 F Sport models, the Black Line special edition features two exterior paint colours, standard matte black wheels, orange or black brake calipers, black chrome accents, and orange interior stitching. Just 650 units will be available.

Volkswagen Arteon R-Line

The Volkswagen Arteon R-Line features a choice of 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels, R-Line badges, a unique front bumper, R-Line air inlets, and a gloss black rear spoiler. On the inside, drivers are welcomed by the R-Line logo on the screen, contrast stitching and other interior upgrades. The Arteon will be available to North American customers in the autumn.

Hyundai Tucson Sport

The 2018 Hyundai Sport is now equipped with a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine developing 181hp and 175lb ft of torque. Sport trim also includes a six-speed automatic transmission, blind-spot detection, push-button start, 19-inch alloy wheels and dual-zone climate control. US customers will be £25,150 for the front-wheel-drive Sport, with all-wheel drive available for an extra £1,400.

The 10 hottest new SUVs at the New York Auto Show

New York Auto ShowUnless you’ve been living under a rock for the past decade, you’ll know that SUVs are hotter than hot cakes right now. New car buyers simply cannot get enough of the high-ridin’ heroes of the high street.

The 2017 New York Auto Show offers everything from a supercar-taming Jeep to a crazy concept from Toyota. We check out 10 of the best SUVs on display.

Jeep Grand Cherokee TrackhawkNew York Auto Show

Jeep’s claim that the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is the “quickest SUV ever” might ruffle a few feathers at Tesla, but there’s no doubting its performance credentials. The supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine delivers 707hp and 645lb ft, enough to keep that new Dodge Demon thingy on its toes.

The top speed is 180mph, while the 0-60mph time is polished off in 3.5 seconds. For reference, the Tesla Model X will sprint to 60mph in a claimed 2.9 seconds. But if the Tesla represents the future of the SUV, the Trackhawk is thoroughly old-school. A jackhammer to Tesla’s silent assassin.

Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S CoupeNew York Auto Show

Nearly 50 years of AMG history has led us here: to the Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S Coupe. The 4.0-litre V8 biturbo produces 503hp and 516lb ft of torque, helping to propel the aesthetically-challenged SUV to 60mph in 3.7 seconds.

The Coupe shares many of its styling cues with the standard and more practical GL63 SUV, which means a bold AMG Panamericana grille at the front and an aggressive rear bumper featuring an integrated diffuser. The key difference is the sloping roofline, which gives it the look of a classic coupe. That’s if you squint. Like, really hard. No, harder than that.

Chevrolet Tahoe RSTNew York Auto Show

Keen not be left chasing shadows – or rather the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk – Chevrolet has released a Rally Sport Truck (RST) package for the Suburban and Tahoe. The RST delivers the obligatory styling upgrades and larger wheels, but it’s the Tahoe that has piqued our interest.

Tick the box marked ‘Performance’ and the Tahoe RST is treated to the 6.2-litre V8 engine lifted straight out of the Silverado. While 420hp and 460lb ft of torque might not seem like a big deal in a world where the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk exists, it certainly makes for an interesting SUV. The 0-60mph time of 5.7 seconds is more hot hatch than supercar, mind.

Lincoln NavigatorNew York Auto Show

Nobody does supersize SUVs quite like the Americans, and the new Lincoln Navigator has the potential to be the best of the breed. Lincoln claims that it will elevate “family travel to first class” and it’s certainly large enough to rival an airliner, with enough comfort and convenience features to challenge a first class departure lounge.

It’s lighter, too, with a new aluminium-alloy helping the new Navigator to tip the scales some 200 pounds lighter than before. That said, it’ll still weigh the equivalent of an out-of-town supermarket. Power is sourced from a twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing 450hp.

Volvo XC60New York Auto Show

If the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade are prime examples of all-American SUVs, the Volvo XC60 offers a more European flavour. Introduced at the 2007 North American International Auto Show, the XC60 muscled in on the US market, quickly establishing itself as Volvo’s best-selling vehicle.

More than a million XC60s have been sold, which represents 30% of Volvo’s global sales, so there’s a lot of pressure resting on the shoulders of this good looking SUV. If it’s as good as the XC90 – which we suspect it will be – it stands every chance of picking up where the old model left off.

Buick EnclaveNew York Auto Show

The Enclave is as important to Buick as the XC60 is to Volvo. Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC, called the original model a “game-changer”: a reference to the fact that it arrived at a time when GM was in need of a hero. The outgoing model has been on sale for close to a decade: a testament to its success and popularity.

The new Enclave is bigger than before, but remains powered by a 3.6-litre V6 engine, with power increased to 302hp. Buick has used the new Enclave to launch the new Avenir sub-brand. Think along the lines of Ford’s Vignale, with plusher materials, improved tech and a higher price.

Subaru AscentNew York Auto Show

If Subaru wants to mix it with the big boys, it needs an authentic SUV. Something larger than the Outback, tougher than the XV and less niche than the Forester. The Ascent concept previews a future three-row SUV that will be called the, er, Subaru Ascent.

The good news is that the interior looks superb, complete with middle-row captain’s chairs and three seats in the third row. You also know that it will be formidable off-road. The bad news is that the Ascent will be sold exclusively in North America.

Infiniti QX80 MonographNew York Auto Show

To say that the Infiniti QX80 Monograph is slightly less ugly than the current QX80 would be like saying Freddy Krueger is slightly less scary than Michael Myers. While it might be true, it’s still going to give you nightmares. But don’t worry, it’s just a design study, so there’s still time for Infiniti to have a rethink.

Infiniti has issued many words to promote the Monobrow – 1,224, to be precise – but doesn’t give too much away. The alloy wheels, in case you’re wondering, are 24-inch in diameter and overlap the tyres to present the appearance of 26-inch rims. An SUV for the Middle East, perhaps, but not one for Middle England.

Range Rover VelarNew York Auto Show

The Range Rover Velar is old news. Fresh from its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Ellie Goulding was invited to take a tour of New York in the SUV that will sit between the Evoque and Sport in the Range Rover range.

Three engine options will be offered in the US, including a 247hp 2.0-litre petrol, 180hp 2.0-litre diesel and 380hp supercharged V6 petrol. “I have always been a big Range Rover fan”, said a starry-eyed Ellie Goulding.

Toyota FT-4XNew York Auto Show

Half-Blade Runner escapee, half-lifestyle accessory, the Toyota FT-4X concept is based on the same platform as the new CH-R. That makes it a potential rival for the Jeep Renegade – if Toyota builds it.

Inside, there’s an instrument cluster that looks like a smartphone, a removable radio and door handles that double as water bottles. There’s also a GoPro camera mounted in the door mirror. Young, outdoorsy types will love it. If only they could afford to buy new cars…

It has to be the Bugatti Chiron, right? With 1,500hp from its 8.0-litre W16 engine, victory was never in doubt. The ultimate hypercar hits 62mph in 2.5 seconds. Top speed? That hasn’t been confirmed yet, but expect something north of 270mph.

It may be fast, but the Chiron has never been much of a looker. Especially in US-spec, as seen here, with blocky rear bumpers designed to meet low-speed impact requirements. Reverse-park with caution, people.

Dodge Challenger SRT Demon

The much-teased Dodge Challenger SRT Demon has been anything but fast arriving, but it’s finally here. It packs an incredible 840hp and can hit 60mph in just 2.3 seconds. Drag racers will be keen to hear it can cover the quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds, with a terminal speed of 140mph.

That power comes from a 6.2-litre Hemi V8 producing a, er, considerable 770lb ft of torque. Oh, and a massive 2.7-litre supercharger also lends a hand. It’s got clever drag car technology to help put that power down, too.

The Audi RS5 made its European debut at last month’s Geneva Motor Show, but arrives in the US for the first time. We’ll take any opportunity for another look at the RS5, which features the compulsory RS honeycomb grille along with an optional carbon fibre roof and 20-inch alloys.

Of course, what we really care about is what’s under the bonnet. There’s a 2.9-litre twin-turbo petrol engine, as used in the Porsche Panamera S, which replaces the 4.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 of its predecessor. It boasts 444hp, hits 62mph in 3.9 seconds and is good for a top speed of 174mph.

The GLC63 may have been attracting all the attention on the Mercedes stand, but in the corner is this: the Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate. The car makes its US debut after a European reveal at Geneva. Like the saloon, it’s powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 producing a not-too-shabby 603hp.

More than 600hp means this family estate will hit 62mph in 3.4 seconds, while four-wheel drive helps in the bends. To give its eco credentials a helping hand, it also features cylinder-deactivation tech as standard.

Yes, it’s yet another Nissan GT-R. This one is the Track Edition, which slots in between the regular model and the hot Nismo. It makes do with the same 565hp 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 as the standard GT-R, along with four-wheel drive and a dual-clutch gearbox.

So what’s different? The Track Edition boasts a titanium exhaust, while Nismo has fiddled with the suspension to help shave 8.1kg off the overall weight. There are cosmetic tweaks inside and out, while Nismo’s 20-inch forged alloy wheels complete the look.

Another Geneva debut has made its way across the Atlantic. This time it’s the hardcore Porsche fan’s choice: the 911 GT3. For 2017, power from its naturally-aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six has been boosted to 500hp. Yes, 500hp.

As a result, the track-focused 911 will hit 62mph in 3.2 seconds and is good for a top speed of 197mph. As standard, it’ll come with a seven-speed PDK auto gearbox (boo!), but buyers can opt for a six-speed manual (hurrah!). Cosmetic tweaks are minimal, but it does feature a larger diffuser, along with a carbon fibre wing.

The Audi TT was always considered a bit of a soft option – a car for those who cut hair for a living. Not so the 400hp TT RS, which boasts genuine supercar-baiting performance: 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 174mph.

Tim Pitt of Motoring Research got a bit carried away on the TT RS launch. He said: “On sinuous switchbacks that snake through rock-strewn valleys, the uber-TT feels in its element. Magnetic Ride adaptive dampers (another option, naturally) hunker it down deliciously, before another huge slug of turbocharged torque blasts us between the bends. It’s deft and controlled, yet utterly explosive.”

With 400 horses from its mid-mounted supercharged V6, the Evora Sport 400 does the benchmark 0-62mph sprint in 4.1 seconds and 186mph flat-out. But it’s the way this car goes around corners that makes it really special.

Lotus is expecting big things in the US for its Evora 400, so it’ll be pleased about the attention it’s getting out here in New York. How many of these admirers will be tempted one over the obvious Porsche, we wonder.

Think hybrids are only for Uber drivers and right-on Hollywood celebs? Think again. Porsche’s second Panamera hybrid has a V8 (as opposed to a V6) petrol engine, plus an electric motor. The combined result is a mighty 680hp, plus a (faintly ridiculous) official fuel economy figure of 97mpg.

That prodigious power output means the Turbo S E-Hybrid will blast to 62mph in 3.2 seconds and reach 192mph. Not bad for a luxury four-seater with a large boot. The ‘family’ 918 Spyder?

With 400hp, the Audi RS3 is officially the world’s hottest hatch. Except there’s also a saloon version for that authentic ‘junior RS4’ look. Quattro four-wheel-drive helps the RS3 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds, plus a top speed of 174mph.

Peter Burgess of Motoring Research was one the first journalists to drive the 2017 Audi RS3. He said: “While it’s hard not to like the BMW M2, or the more aggressive attitude of the Mercedes-AMG A 45, the RS3 is simply the better all-rounder. Easier to drive fast, and more pleasant when all you need is a regular hatchback (or saloon) that’s nice to live with. You make fewer compromises with the RS3, and to us that makes it a winner.”

Dodge has been teasing the Challenger SRT Demon for so long, it could give Dita Von Teese a run for a her money. It started back in January, when Dodge promised it would be “raising the bar again” with the SRT Demon, before proceeding to release a series of teaser videos and images.

No performance figures have been released – yet – but it will almost certainly have a million horsepower and enough torque to send the earth spinning in the opposite direction. It will also be more than 90kg lighter than the Hellcat, thanks in no small part to the fact that there’s only enough seating for one.

If the Demon is a little too hardcore – or you intend to carry a passenger or two – the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk could be the next best thing. It’s likely to be powered by the same supercharged 6.2-litre V8 lump found in the Challenger and Charger Hellcat models, making it considerably more powerful than the Grand Cherokee SRT.

Like, properly powerful. How does 707hp grab you? That’s 232hp more than the SRT. But don’t expect it to stop there, as Jeep is expected to pull out all the stops in making this one of the most track-focused SUVs ever built.

It’s not new and unless you’re one of the chosen few, you can’t buy it, but the Ford GT will be one of the stars of the New York Auto Show. Besides, seeing Matt LeBlanc taking one for a spirited drive along the Pacific Coast Highway and then Laguna Seca has only served to heighten the anticipation for Ford’s supercar.

It comes with five different drive modes, including ‘Wet’, which must have been designed with British buyers in mind. “We focused on simplifying the experience,” said Derek Bier, Ford GT manager. “Optimising this car for just about any situation was critical, because ensuring owners always enjoy driving it was a top priority.”

Lexus is promising “the most engaging LS driving experience yet” with the new LS F Sport. Available on the LS 500 and LS 500h, the F Sport is likely to boast stiffer suspension, new alloy wheels, subtle exterior tweaks and a revised interior.

“The all-new LS is based on an extended version of the brand’s premium global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA-L) platform – the stiffest that Lexus has ever developed,” said Lexus. Ideal if you’re hunting down the odd S-Class.

Buick Regal TourXNew York Motor Show preview, in pictures

Move over Volvo V60 Cross Country, Subaru Outback and Audi A4 Allroad, because the Buick Regal TourX is coming through. The all-wheel drive estate car rides higher than the standard model and features standard roof rails and rural-friendly body cladding.

Looks great, doesn’t it? Should be familiar, too, given that it’s based on the Buick version of the new Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer. Power is sourced from a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine developing 250hp, while an eight-speed automatic transmission is fitted as standard. The Buick Regal TourX is yet another reason not to buy an SUV.

Sliding sideways into the Jacob Javits Convention Center is the Nissan GT-R Track Edition, which is making its North American debut. It’ll occupy the middle ground between the entry-level Premium model and the flagship Nismo, with some juicy Nismo bits to make up for the standard 565hp output.

The Track Edition is available by order only and offers increased body rigidity over the Premium model, Nismo-tuned suspension, along with reduced weight and additional roll stiffness versus the Premium. The tyres and wheels are also Nismo-spec. The price: $127,990.

Range Rover VelarNew York Motor Show preview, in pictures

Fresh from its first public appearance in Geneva, the Range Rover Velar will make its American debut in New York. The Velar slots between the Evoque and the Sport and is, according to Land Rover, “the avant-garde Range Rover”.

It’s already available to order in the US, with prices starting from $49,900. A limited edition First Edition model is available in the first year of sales.

Nothing has been confirmed, but we’re expecting to see a new Jaguar F-Type in New York. Rumour has it the new version will be powered by a four-cylinder Ingenium engine.

Last year, the Jaguar F-Type hit the headlines when the 200mph SVR model was driven through New York’s Park Avenue Tunnel as part of its big reveal.

Whatever you think of the styling, it’s hard not to be impressed by the performance figures. Thanks to its 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4Matic+ will sprint to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds, or 4.0 seconds in the slightly less powerful non S model.

In S guise, the power output is 510hp, while the ‘standard’ model has to ‘make do’ with 476hp. These new models sport the AMG Panamericana grille, something previously reserved for the AMG GT family.

If you’re after something even less aesthetically pleasing than the GLC, and you’re prepared to sacrifice a little in the way of practicality, the Coupe version is the car for you. The power outputs and the performance figures are the same, even if the GLC Coupe is a touch heavier than the GLC.

Opt for the S model and you’ll be treated to a ‘Race’ drive mode, “in which all the parameters are configured for maximum performance.” Mercedes-AMG takes its hot SUVs rather seriously.

The all-new 2017 Honda Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan will make their first appearance ahead of the New York International Auto Show, in a “dynamic video reveal” on Honda’s YouTube channel.

According to Honda, the new car will be the “sportiest and most agile Civic to ever wear the renowned Si badge.” Power is sourced from a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Following its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the all-new Volvo XC60 will take a bow at the New York International Auto Show. The success of the outgoing model owes much to its popularity in the US, so this is an important reveal for Volvo.

American buyers will be able to choose from a 250hp T5 turbocharged engine, a 316hp T6 twin-charger engine, along with the 400hp T8 twin-engine plug-in hybrid. The 2018 S90 will also make its debut in New York.

The 2018 Audi TT RS is the most powerful production TT ever built and it’s making its debut at the New York International Auto Show. Its 2.5-litre TFSI engine develops 400hp and produces the unmistakable sound of a five-cylinder engine.

The quattro all-wheel drive system has the ability to send nearly 100% of the torque to the rear wheels, allowing the TT RS to sprint to 60mph in 3.6 seconds. Four driving modes are available: comfort, auto, dynamic and individual.

Big news this, with an all-new Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid and Honda Clarity Electric set to pull up alongside the Clarity Fuel Cell. Honda claims it makes the Clarity the first vehicle to offer fuel cell, battery electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains in one series model.

Details are thin on the ground, but we do know that the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid will be launched in 50 states and will offer an electric driving range in excess of 40 miles.

Hold the front page, because a new Toyota Yaris is in town. Don’t go too excited, because it’s more of a refresh than a revamp, with a bold new look and a few cosmetic upgrades.

Inside, all models feature a three-spoke steering wheel with audio controls and a “sporty” analog instrument cluster. Contain yourself.

Kids, it might be safe to come out from behind the sofa, as this teaser image previews the next generation QX80. It’s fair to say that the current model is a little cosmetically challenged, but the new version – which will be revealed in concept form – looks more appealing.

The styling brings it in line with the QX60, which will be more familiar to UK buyers. In the US, the QX80 is priced from $63,850 and is powered by a 5.6-litre V8 engine producing 400hp. Unsurprisingly, it’s not the most fuel efficient SUV in the world.

Fresh from its reveal in Geneva, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet is making its North American debut in New York. The roof can be open or closed in 20 seconds when travelling at a speed of up to 30mph.

With a 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbocharged engine, the Cabriolet will be available with 4Matic all-wheel drive – a first for the topless E-Class. US buyers will be available to cruise the boulevards of America by the end of 2017.

Hyundai is expected to unveil a new Sonata in New York, which follows the launch of the updated version in Korea. The styling changes are designed to bring it in line with the Hyundai’s current corporate look, with a face that’s not too dissimilar to the cars on sale in the UK.

The Sonata is a strong seller in the US, with prices starting from $21,950.

Important car, this, given that it has been the top-selling minivan in the US for the past two years. The Toyota Sienna is built in Princeton and offers a choice of seven- or eight-seat cabin configurations.

For 2018, all models will feature Toyota’s excellent Safety Sense package, with a new multimedia system fitted across the range. The styling is also updated to include a larger front grille.

And still the Nissan 370Z soldiers on. The replacement for the 350Z was first shown in Los Angeles back in 2008 and this Heritage Edition is designed to celebrate the impending 50th anniversary of Japan’s first commercially successful sports car.

The special edition previews the styling changes to the 2018 370Z and will be offered in two exterior colours – Chicane Yellow and Magnetic Black. Power is sourced from a 3.7-litre V6 engine producing 332hp.

World Car AwardsAfter months of judging, the 2016 World Car Awards have been announced in a glittering ceremony at the New York Auto Show.

The elite of the world’s top auto manufacturers were in attendance, fingers crossed, to see if their model scooped one of the five prizes on offer – including the prestigious overall World Car of the Year Award. We were there too – here’s the winners, revealed.

73 judges pick from 23 cars


All cars in the 2016 World Car Awards were launched on at least two continents between 1 January 2015 and 31 May 2016. A 73-strong team of jurors choose an initial entry list of 23 vehicles, which was narrowed down to a shortlist of 10. More recently the ‘Top Three in the World’ list was released, giving the finalists that brings us to the New York Auto Show awards ceremony. So, without further ado…

World Performance Car 2016: the finalists

The headline-grabbing World Performance Car 2016 was fought between three high-power halo cars: the Audi R8 Coupe supercar, Honda Civic Type-R hot hatch and the Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupe.

Performance cars should be thrillers: desirable cars that are a joy to drive. The most powerful Audi ever built, the judges decided that the R8 Coupe is the car that provides the biggest performance buzz in 2016.

“We are delighted that the Audi R8 has been voted as the 2016 World Performance Car,” said Dietmar Voggenreiter, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Audi AG. “The R8 is one of the strongest calling cards for the four rings and is the flagship car from Audi Sport. The first generation of the R8 paved our way toward becoming a premium brand and raised the aura of Audi to a new level. The new R8 will continue this success story and further accelerate the growth strategy of Audi Sport.”

World Luxury Car 2016: the finalists

In the running for World Luxury Car 2016 were the Audi Q7 SUV, BMW 7 Series sedan and Volvo XC90 SUV.

Luxury cars should push boundaries and set standards for high-technology features that can filter down to the rest of the range, believe the World Car Awards jurors. The BMW 7 Series, with no fewer than 25 all-new innovations, thus scoops the prize for 2016.

“We are delighted and honoured that the BMW 7 Series has been recognised as the World Luxury Car of the Year,” said BMW in a statement. “Since it launched last autumn, the response from both the media and our customers has been extremely positive. There can be no doubt that the new BMW 7 Series is an outstanding flagship for the brand, setting new standards in its class.”

The World Car Design 2016 is a two-brand race: the Mazda CX-3 crossover SUV and MX-5 roadster went up against the Jaguar XE mid-size sedan. Six famed design experts from around the world decided the overall winner – which was..?

The judges decided that Mazda’s reinterpretation of the classic MX-5 roadster deserves the overall World Car Design award for 2016. A car that looks way better in the metal than in images, the judge’s experienced eyes rated it top in 2016.

“While I accept this award on behalf of the company, I do so representing every Mazda employee, retail partner and customer around the world who has ever felt the joy of driving a pure roadster,” said Masahiro Moro, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations, and Managing Executive Officer, Mazda Motor Corporation. “We say ‘Driving Matters’ in our advertising, and we prove it in our cars.”

World Green Car 2016: the finalists

World Green Car 2016 was also a two-brand affair. The second-generation Chevrolet Volt range-extender hybrid was pitched against the Toyota Prius hybrid and Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell. Three very different technologies – which did the judges go for?

The judges went for easily the most innovative of the trio, the Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell. The world’s first mass-production hydrogen fuel cell car, it’s a trailblazer that simply too significant and too much of a groundbreaker to ignore.

“Just as Prius changed the world nearly 20 years ago, the hydrogen-powered Mirai is ready to make history,” said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. “With a range of over 300 miles per tank, a refueling time of under five minutes, and emissions that consist only of water vapor, Mirai is leading the world forward toward a more sustainable future.”

World Car of the Year 2016: Mazda MX-5

To cheers throughout the room, Mazda’s MX-5 was crowned World Car of the Year 2016 at the New York ceremony. The glittering prize was received with immense delight by the project team, who’d flown in specially from Japan when they heard they’d been shortlisted… even becoming a Top Three in the World was big news – winning World Car of the Year is simply enormous for this proud, enthusiastic Japanese company.

“What a wonderful honor, to have the Mazda MX-5 named World Car of the Year,” said Masahiro Moro, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations, and Managing Executive Officer, Mazda Motor Corporation. “As our iconic MX-5 roadster approaches one-million units of production, this award is proof that it is as young, vibrant, fun and relevant as ever.” And now to the rest of the prizes in the World Car Awards 2016.

Mercedes-AMG GT R to debut at 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed

Mercdes-AMG GT SMercedes-AMG will launch a range-topping GT R halo car at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in June, AMG boss Tobias Moers has confirmed to us at the 2016 New York Auto Show.

The new  GT R will be “the highest-performance model we have ever done,” he added – with lap times faster than the Mercedes-Benz SLS Black Series.

‘The current GT S isn’t far off but it doesn’t beat the SLS Black. This car will.”

The range-topping GT R (trademark lawyers from Nissan will be watching very carefully the spacing of the letters and use of hyphens, we’re sure…) will have a full performance upgrade, with bespoke suspension, brakes, tyres and even more engine power.

There’s speculation it may also introduce a four-wheel steering system to the GT line: Moers says AMG engineers ‘punch above their weight’ for their ability to fully engineer custom chassis setups.

“The GT R will be an ambassador model for the brand,” he added, “although we will not take it to the level of Porsche with thigns such as limited availability (the 911 R is restricted to 911 vehicles, for example)”.

“We will also not sell cars for less than the cost of production,” he added…

The confirmation that Mercedes-AMG’s new halo car will launch at Goodwood is a major fillip for the motorsport festival, and AMG will be certain not to disappoint. Now its launch date is confirmed, watch this space for more news on the Mercedes-AMG GT R.

Nissan GT-R MY17Nissan has revealed a facelifted 2017 model year GT-R 17MY at the 2016 New York Auto Show. At first glance, it looks like a simple facelift, but there’s more at work here than first meets the eye – and we don’t just mean that striking new bright metallic orange colour…

Why has Nissan introduced the GT-R 17MY?

The current-shape GT-R is not the freshest car around: it was launched almost a decade ago, and Nissan hasn’t really evolved it much since. Because it’s looking unlikely we’ll get an all-new version much before 2020, the Japanese firm has thus taken the knife to the current car, to both make it look more modern and address customer demands for a bit more performance but a lot more comfort.

The 17MY Godzilla is still extreme, but it’s a bit more plush and cosseting along with it…

Nissan GT-R 17MY: in the metal at New York

The 17MY GT-R looks… familiar. That’s because it is – this is a facelift of a car that’s been around since 2007, remember. But saying that, there is enough in the metal to interest the performance car enthusiasts this car attracts so strongly, not least the introduction of Nissan’s new ‘V-motion’ matt-finish design signature grille. It’s bigger to provide more engine cooling, while an all-new bonnet boasts extra reinforcement to improve high-speed handling. Downforce-inducing front spoiler lip and bumper finish add yet more aggression to Godzilla.

There’s a lot more going on at the rear too. New bodywork improves airflow and there are now side air vents next to the quad exhausts. Nissan says this cleverly creates less drag without affecting downforce generation. Also check the greater use of matt black in the lower body, making the car look wider and more modern. Fancy new Y-spoke 20-inch alloys complete the facelift.

In images, the Nissan GT-R 17MY doesn’t look like it’s been transformed, but believe us, it has. The dashboard and instrument panel are all-new (despite looking similar to the old one) and are now covered in in TAKUMI precision-stitched leather. The new fascia is driver-orientated and, interestingly, has a ‘horizontal flow’ to its shape that Nissan says gives a sense of increased stability for front-seat passengers.

Infotainment is all-new, paddleshifters are now mounted to the steering wheel and the number of buttons has been seriously reduced – from 27 in the old car to 11 in the 17MY variant. Oh, and both paddleshifters and ventilation control ‘sound’ better when used.

The gadget-packed infotainment screen of the old GT-R, with its multitude of functions, gauges and displays, was always a highlight. Nissan’s kept this feature-packed excitement but fitted a better, bigger eight-incou touchscreen that now has large icons on the display screen so it’s easier to operate.

There’s a new display command control on the carbon fibre centre console that further helps ease of operation.

Katsura Orange multi-layer paint option

Nissan GT-R 17MY

Nissan has introduced a new paint option for the 17MY GT-R: Katsura Orange, which can be seen on the NYIAS show car. A multi-layer paint finish, it gives a particularly rich and deep look that, with the GT-R’s enhanced front end and crisp black lower body sections, ensures it really stands out despite its familiar profile.

There are more colours inside as well: a new tan option joins red, ivory and black.

Engines: 570-horsepower for the TAKUMI-built 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6

Nissan has retained the familiar GT-R 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 that’s hand-built by a single TAKUMI master technician. Despite expectations, it hasn’t been power-boosted to the round 600-horsepower of the GT-R Nismo, but to a lesser (but still potent) 570-horsepower.

Nissan’s not released performance figures yet but says the boost will be felt most at mid- to high-range engine speeds, although the enhanced sound from a new titanium exhaust should be delivered all the time. The six-speed dual-clutch transmission is also now smoother and less noisy.

Tech: handling honed, ride smoothed

Nissan says suspension has been further honed and the bodyshell has been stiffened, which means the GT-R 17MY will be able to corner at higher speeds and be more stable through switchback transitions. It’s done this while improving comfort at the same time: ride quality is much smoother, reckons Nissan, whole new sound absorption materials mean the cabin is quieter at higher speeds.

It’s “the most comfortable model to date, with a new sense of elegance and civility that one would rarely find in such a high-performance supercar,” says GT-R chief product specialist Hiroshi Tamura. It is, he feels, “the ultimate GT that possesses amazing performance, newfound civility and a rich racing history”.

When does the Nissan GT-R 17MY arrive in showrooms?

The revised Nissan GT-R 17MY will be available in the autumn, says Nissan. Prices are to be announced but shouldn’t be too far removed from today’s levels – it’s not an all-new car after all…
