Volvo has teased a new concept car that may preview the all-new XC90 SUV that’s due on sale later in 2014.
The new Volvo Concept XC Coupe is, officially, the second in a series of three design concepts from new design boss Thomas Ingenlath. It will be showcased at the Detroit Motor Show next month, after being revealed on 8 January.
Volvo’s teasing it now though – and we reckon it’s more than just a concept. Add on some rear doors and you may well just have the new Volvo XC90 right there.
The new XC90 will certainly feature most of the design elements seen in this concept: those distinctive rear lights, the elegant new nose (with big, upright Volvo Grille), the strong rear haunches.
It seems Ingenlath is keen to evolve the brand’s design into something more simple, more elegant and much more Swedish. If the production Volvo XC90 is as smart as this Concept XC Coupe suggests, he may well be onto something.
It’s based on Volvo’s new Scaleable Platform Architecture (SPA), which will underpin all its medium and large vehicles in the future. This is highly flexible, which gives Ingenlath much more design flexibility.
One more thing, too: note the vents in the bonnet, the low and lithe front end, the way those rear wheelarches seem to work so well in sharply-profiled coupe guise.
Could this model also be hinting at a future Volvo SUV coupe rival to models such as the Range Rover Sport and BMW X6? Now that really would be something.
Watch this space – and watch the news from the Detroit Motor Show, which MR will bring to you from early 2014.
