The practical new Jaguar XF Sportbrake estate marks the return of the load-lugging wagon to the Jaguar line-up. On sale now with prices from £34,910, the new rival to the BMW 5 Series Touring and Volvo V90 boasts big improvements in space efficiency and even offers the lifestyle accessory of a waterproof ‘activity key’ so you can lock up your XF Sportbrake and jump in the sea without worry.
Boasting a 565-litre boot that extends to 1700 litres with the split-fold rear seats down, the XF Sportbrake also boosts greater knee room and head room for rear seat passengers, and bathes the cabin in light thanks to a full-length 1.6 square metre panoramic glass roof.
Such space efficiency is thanks to the 4955mm-long XF Sportbrake growing by just 6mm over the previous one, but getting a 51mm-longer wheelbase. It’s also sleek, with an aero drag factor Cd of 0.29 – indeed, Jaguar design director thinks “it looks just as sporty as the saloon, if not more so”. That’s the power, he says, of every line on the Sportbrake serving a purpose, “creating a fast, sweeping silhouette”.
The XF Sportbrake will use four-cylinder and V6 engines; most will likely run with the 2.0-litre turbodiesel Ingenium engine – it comes in 163hp or 180hp front-wheel drive guise, or 180hp and twin-turbo 240hp AWD form. There’s also a 300hp 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel and a sole 250hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder RWD turbo petrol.
Jaguar says the V6 will do 62mph in 6.6 seconds, while the 163hp diesel will average 62.8mpg and emit 118g/km CO2. You can also tow up to 2000kg with the XF Sportbrake – which has standard self-levelling rear air suspension for a level ride height whatever the load.
Global marketing director Steven de Ploey reckons “the XF Sportbrake is the embodiment of everything our brand stands for, bringing Jaguar design and dynamics to create vehicles that excite the senses and support active lifestyles”. He hopes it will “introduce a new generation of drivers to Jaguar’s drive, passion and comfort”.
