I’m heading to a Fiat launch, via quite remarkably delayed flight to Milan: let’s hope the travel arrangements can only get better.
Some parts of it, I can’t yet tell you about. They’re embargoed until 1 March (come back to MR then, etc).
But I can tell you about something I’m rather intrigued about – the Dr. Dre Fiat 500L. Or, rather, the Fiat 500L Beats Edition. For that is Dr. Dre’s rather popular headphones brand whose tech team have turned their attentions to the Fiat compact MPV.
It looks good; it pairs 500L Trekking body styling with 17-inch alloys, wheelarch spats, side skirts and beefed-up bumpers. Pick gloss or satin paint; red brake calipers are standard.
It’s not just a styling job though, despite the so-called Total Black interior pack, matt grey dashboard and ‘eco-leather’ seats (eco-leather?).
Nope, this Fiat 500L really does beat, courtesy of a BeatsAudio 520W audio system with an eight-channel DSP amp, seven speakers and two sub-woofer channels. Dr. Dre’s team have even created algorithms to “recreate the sound spectrum that artists experience during studio recordings”, no less.
It, ahem, sounds quite something. I’m quite looking forward to checking it out, although I do hope they have a decent music collection to demonstrate it. There’s nothing worse than being shut in a car for an audio demo that involves, ooh, 1990s-era Michael Jackson.
Oh, and the Fiat 500L Beats Edition sounds particularly fitting for this time of year, too. See, it’s based on the Fiat 500L Trekking, so gets tweaked suspension, Mud and Snow tyres plus the Fiat Traction+ wheel-grip system.
See, I’m writing from Heathrow, waiting for a flight that’s been delayed by two hours and counting… due to the weather. When will we take off? Beats me…
