Infiniti Q Inspiration Concept previews future-proofed car design

Infiniti Q Inspiration ConceptThe car of the future will have new proportions based around a longer body and a shorter front end, reckons Infiniti – and its new Q Inspiration Concept is the first manifestation of this new type of design.

Set to debut at the Detroit Auto Show on 15 January, the new car is a four-door saloon car that “avoids classical saloon forms” thanks to its elongated body and short bonnet. The firm calls it “the first manifestation of Infiniti’s new form language for an era of advanced powertrains”.

Downsized engines take up much less space than today’s motors, and electric motors will require even less room. Such smart, compact powertrains mean the designers don’t have to graft on long, voluminous front ends with space to package them, freeing them up to do new things.

Infiniti executive design director Karim Habib says the firm thus aims “to take the traditional saloon architecture to its next stage of evolution.

“Experimenting with new proportions in an established segment… the Q Inspiration features a shorter hood [bonnet] and elongated body, with all the benefits to interior wellbeing, comfort and space that this layout entails.”

The new model is likely to preview a future Infiniti rival to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, following on from the 2014 showcase of the Q80 Inspiration four-door coupe concept. Infiniti currently doesn’t have a large luxury car and bosses believe the only way to take on the establishment would be to offer something more stylish and futuristic than the norm.

The Infiniti Q Inspiration could be our first look at the firm’s future rival to the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series.
