Porsche 550 Spyder J is a scaled-down sports car you can drive

Fully licensed by Porsche, the Hedley Studios 550 J features all-electric power for a potential 50mph top speed

Production of the Hedley Studios Porsche 550 J will be capped at 250 examples, priced from £69,500 plus VAT

The Porsche 550 Spyder is among the most significant cars in the German marque’s long history – and also one of the most expensive to obtain.

Developed for motorsport, around 90 examples of the 550 Spyder were built between 1953 and 1956. The roadster brought Porsche success on racetracks around the world.

Actor James Dean was the most famous owner of a 550 Spyder, and his death behind the wheel of one in 1955 only adds to the fascination around this rare Porsche.

With examples of the 550 Spyder fetching upwards of £4 million at auction, owning one is out of reach for all but the wealthiest Porsche enthusiasts.

However, a new collaboration between Porsche and Oxfordshire-based Hedley Studios could make owning a 550 Spyder far more affordable.

Downsizing done right

The Hedley Studios Porsche 550 J is an 80 percent-scale replica of the full-size classic race car, measuring 2.9 metres in length and 1.2 metres across.

Despite its small dimensions, the cockpit can accommodate two adults, although the 550 J is sadly not legal for road use.

A lightweight and stiff tubular spaceframe chassis has been designed for the 550 J, just like the one found within the 1950s original. Combined with carbon fibre bodywork, the compact Porsche tips the scales at just 330kg – or 350kg with the optional RS Pack fitted.

Instead of a flat-four engine, the rear of the 550 J houses an 11hp electric motor and a lithium-ion battery.

Opting for the RS Pack almost doubles the power output to 21hp. It also adds drilled brakes and adjustable suspension dampers.

Classic looks, modern technology

In standard form, the Hedley 550 J has a top speed of 40mph, while the RS Pack model can reach 50mph. Fully charged, the battery should allow a range of 30 miles.

Four driving modes mean the power output to be tailored from ‘Novice’ all the way through to ‘Race’.

Hedley Studios has used the Porsche 550’s original suspension design, but added Bilstein coilovers for modern performance. Brembo disc brakes replace the drums used in the 1950s, too.

More than 1,300 new components were created for the 550 J, including alloy wheels to replicate the classic rims. These are fitted with new, EV-specific tyres.

The interior is traditionally minimalist, with a three-spoke steering and the fuel gauge repurposed into a battery charge meter.

Prices for the Hedley Studios 550 J start from £83,400 including VAT in the UK, making it substantially cheaper than an original version.

Customers will be able to customise their car extensively, including period-correct liveries and paint-to-sample colours.

Limited to 250 examples, orders for the 550 J can be placed now. The first deliveries are expected in spring 2027.

Ben Hedley, founder of Hedley Studios, said: “The Porsche 550 Spyder represents a seminal moment in the company’s history because it was its first purpose-built racer and a car that could compete with the world’s best – and win. It wasn’t just fast, it was accessible, purposeful and beautifully honest in its design. With the Porsche 550 J, we wanted to honour that spirit while making it relevant for a new generation.

“Creating the Porsche 550 J would have been impossible without the partnership and trust of Porsche themselves, and working directly with their experts in Stuttgart gave us access to the original DNA of this icon.”
