The Guardian says that 940 cars were reported torched on the night of 31 December, compared to 1,067 last year.
Revealing numbers for the New Year’s Eve car torching ‘ritual’ is something the French government has done for several years now, although it was abandoned in 2010-11, says the Guardian.
It was feared at the time it was leading to copycat fires.
The French interior ministry credits a “substantial, active and dissuasive mobilisation of the security forces” with cutting the number of torched cars.
More than 90,000 emergency services workers were deployed in France on New Year’s Eve.
