Audi A3 Cabriolet

Audi will show the new A3 Cabriolet at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. Longer yet lighter than the old one, ordering opens next month for March 2014 delivery.

The new VW MQB-based A3 Cabriolet is now more of an A5 Cabriolet junior, with strong shoulders and a less stubby rear end. Unlike some other Audi designs, it’s fresher and much less evolutionary.

It’s also 15mm lower than the old one, again helping it look sleeker.

The acoustic roof goes up and down in 18 seconds and is offered in black, grey or brown (the roof liner can also be had in ‘lunar silver’ instead of boring black). Audi’s introduced an optional head-level heating system for the front seats and says the acoustic foam is thicker than before, so it’s quieter inside.

Three engines are offered in launch form: 140hp 1.4-litre TFSI, 180hp 1.8-litre TFSI and the 2.0-litre TDI diesel.

Audi has confirmed the 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TFSI will follow, as will a 300hp S3 Cabriolet. This’ll be quite a thing: 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds, quattro four-wheel drive and suspension 25mm lower even than S sports suspension A3 Cabriolet.

Prices will be announced next month.

MR says: Audi new model introductions can be non-events on the styling front but the A3 Cabriolet is more different than most. No great surprises, just a very well rounded car – and the first-ever S3 Cabriolet sounds intriguing.
