1980s pop group Duran Duran have been confirmed as the surprise headline act helping launch the new Mazda MX-5 in Monterey, California on Wednesday 3 September.
The Brummie quartet, led by Simon Le Bon, have sold over 100 million records and released 14 Top 10 UK singles. Now, they’re helping release the 2016 Mazda MX-5.
And the link? Um, both were born in the 80s.
“Duran Duran and the MX-5 Miata both made their world debuts in the 1980s and captured the hearts and imagination of an entire generation,” said Russell Wager, vice president of Marketing, MNAO.
(New Romantics may point out Duran Duran were actually formed in 1978, 11 years before the MX-5.)
“In 25 years, both the car and the band have evolved while staying true to their roots. It is this combination of authenticity and endurance that makes the pairing of the MX-5 and Duran Duran so appropriate for this reveal.”
Mazda will broadcast the Monterey reveal via its YouTube channel from 6pm PDT (that’s 2am UK time UK time); there will be simultaneous global reveals in Tokyo and Barcelona, making it a real worldwide event.
As it prepares to launch the fourth generation MX-5, Mazda has revealed latest sales figures show more than 930,000 MX-5 have been sold worldwide. It will thus not be long before the new car helps this soar past the 1 million mark.
Coincidentally, Duran Duran are working on a new album, produced by Mark Ronson.
