Yes, Jaguar may have scooped the 2019 World Car of the Year Award with the I-Pace, but one American state is still about good old-fashioned muscle cars.
Journalists at the 2019 Texas Auto Roundup assessed a wide variety of cars, and judged the latest Dodge Challenger to be the overall winner from 29 contenders.
The retro-inspired Challenger also notched up wins as the Performance Car of Texas, and also the official Performance Coupe of Texas for 2019, after two days of assessments.
According to Michael Mars, President of the Texas Auto Writers Association, Mopar muscle emerged victorious as “driving enthusiasts in Texas love horsepower, and the Dodge Challenger’s classic muscular lines and monumental power won over our voters”.
The Texas Auto Roundup also saw other important key wins for the Fiat Chrysler Automobile family, with the Chrysler Pacifica picking up the prize as the official Family Car of Texas for 2019.
Alfa Romeo’s Giulia Quadrifoglio took the award for the best 2019 Performance Sedan, beating the all-new Volkswagen Jetta GLI into second place.
FCA products are no stranger to success in the Lone Star State, with the Maserati Levante GTS a surprising overall winner at the 2018 Texas Truck Rodeo.
The 2019 Texas Auto Roundup also saw the brand-new Kia Telluride drive off as the overall CUV of Texas. Built in West Point, Georgia, the Telluride has been specifically designed and built to compete in the United States.
Compact Car of Texas went to the 2020 Toyota Corolla, whilst the Volkswagen Golf GTI was the top-rated compact performance car.
Demonstrating that the Jaguar I-Pace may have a chance at glory next year, the Green Car of Texas prize for 2019 went to the battery-powered Nissan Leaf.
