The current anti-diesel mood does not, it seems, extend to the car rental sector: almost two in three people hiring a car say they prefer diesel over any other car type, new data from Europcar has revealed. What’s more nearly 8 in 10 rental customers say they would not want to rent an electric car.
Europcar says it’s because drivers are wise to the fact modern diesels are all Euro 6 emissions compliant, so basically as clean as a petrol car. We reckon it’s more likely the fact that diesels go further on a gallon than petrol cars: when you’re hiring a car, the last thing you want to be doing is putting fuel in it.
As for zero-emissions electric cars, 78 percent of people have zero interest in them. The car hire company says it’s working to overcome concern about range anxiety. Sounds like it’s still got plenty of work to do.

It’s been able to find out this information – and now promote it in a press release – because of its new Model Guaranteed service. Instead of forcing people into the hire car lottery, customers can preselect the exact make and model they want. Models eligible include the Volkswagen Golf, Mercedes A-Class, Audi A1, VW Tiguan and Nissan X-Trail. All you need to do is give them at least 24 hours’ notice.
Or, by the sounds of it, as much notice as possible, if you want to stand any chance of preselecting a Volkswagen Golf diesel.
