Coventry’s Ricoh Arena is apparently to go up against the Stade de France, the USA’s Circuit of The Americas and Brazil’s World Cup Final-hosting Maracana Stadium in a bid to host the 2014 Race Of Champions.
The online poll has opened this week to find the fans’ favourite location, with other choices including the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt, Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart and the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha. Plucky Coventry is going up against them all – and the Ricoh Arena has even beaten former UK ROC venue Wembley to the official shortlist.
Fans are being encouraged to vote by a bounty of prizes including a Tag Heuer watch.
The last Race Of Champions was held in 2012; the organisers were unable to find a new venue for the 2013 event after the original venue in Bangkok was cancelled because of the tense political situation. This was despite ‘the man who jumped from space’ Felix Baumgartner being among the driver line-up.
In contrast, the organisers this year seem to have been overwhelmed with offers, and so are running the online poll to come up with a winner – albeit without guaranteeing to send ROC 2014 there: the fan’s vote may not be the final venue. Does Coventry stand a chance though, when up against a World Cup stadium, the US F1 Grand Prix venue and, well, any other venue in the world thanks to an open-entry option in the poll? We shall see.
The Race Of Champions 2014 is expected to be held in early December. At a venue… well, to be announced.
