Citroen has confirmed it will put the DS3 Cabrio Racing concept shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show into limited production.
The 207hp open-top hot hatch was confirmed at a special Citroen Racing event, where a packed schedule that encompasses two FIA World Championships and 25 races over 306 days was announced.
It’s thus important the brand has a road-going Citroen Racing model to capitalise on this activity: enter the DS3 Cabrio Racing.
Mechanically, it’s identical to the old DS3 Racing hatch, so sports the same 1.6-litre Citroen Racing-developed turbo engine. It’s just 25kg heavier than that car so performance should be similar: expect 0-62mph in around 6.5 seconds and a 145mph top speed.
It will carry the same carbon fibre air diffuser, front bumper splitter, body sills and flared wings as the hatch, although it remains to be seen if the vivid colours of the hard-top will be carried over.
Inside, there are plenty of body-colour parts, plus more carbon fibre, Citroen Racing branding for the sports seats and a numbered plaque down by the gearlever.
Citroen built 2400 DS3 Racing hatchbacks (200 made it to the UK) but the DS3 Cabrio Racing is expected to be much more strictly limited in volume: hundreds, rather than thousands: each car will be individually numbered.
No prices have yet been announced but the DS3 Racing hatch wasn’t cheap: we can thus expect a list price of well over £25,000, perhaps even nudging £30,000…
