Audi A5 and S5 Sportback revealed ahead of Paris Motor Show debut

Audi has revealed the five-door Sportback version of its new A5 and S5 models ahead of their official debut at the Paris Motor Show later this month.

Beside the extra two doors, the Sportback is visually very similar to the three-door coupe – which went on sale earlier this year. It’s based on the same MLB platform as the regular A5, although the wheelbase is 60mm longer than the coupe, at 2,824mm.

The biggest gains come inside, where rear-seat passengers get an extra 11mm of shoulder room and 24mm more legroom.

The engines remain the same as the coupes – so buyers have a choice of two petrols and three diesels, ranging from 190hp to 286hp.

Gearboxes come in the form of a six-speed manual transmission, a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch auto and an eight-speed Tiptronic. Quattro four-wheel-drive is available as an option on two versions, and comes as standard on the 286hp 3.0-litre turbodiesel.

Performance fans will be pleased to know that opting for the hot S5 with an extra dose of practicality won’t hinder performance. Powered by a turbocharged V6, it’ll hit 62mph in 4.7 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph – the same as the S5 coupe.

Technology available on the Sportback includes adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist. This brakes and accelerates the cars in congestion at speeds up to 40mph – and can even take over the steering when conditions allow.
