Mercedes-Maybach will reveal a six-metre-long two-door coupe concept at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance next week. The radical car suggests the brand is contemplating the development of a pinnacle range-topping Rolls-Royce rival – maybe even a series of Maybach sub-brand Rolls-Royce rivals.
The firm is keeping tight-lipped about the details of the concept coupe at this stage, but rather tellingly has officially described it as “almost 6 metres of ultimate luxury”.

Rather abstractly, Mercedes-Benz adds the new Mercedes-Maybach coupe concept is “hot and cool”. It is not yet clear what this means, but we’re certain the car itself is going to be amazing.
Mercedes-Maybach has issued just the one moody teaser image for now, but this is enough to confirm the new coupe concept is striking in the extreme. It seems Mercedes-Benz is evaluating building a completely bespoke model for its luxury brand, with unique bodywork that looks like nothing else on the road.
Forget all the glitzy S-Class connotations of the first Maybach relaunch; this is Mercedes-Benz getting serious with its exalted brand. Take two time for modern Maybach as a genuine alternative to Rolls-Royce?
With an incredibly long rear overhang, an elegant and sweeping sideline, plus the most delicate and simple full-length chrome finisher, this low-slung two-door is guaranteed to cause a stir – just as a previous Maybach coupe concept, the Maybach Exelero, did when it was revealed in 2004 (although this time, it will likely be a more positive reaction…).
That radical car was strictly a one-off, but this new concept seems to suggest Mercedes-Benz is looking to develop a rival to the luxurious Rolls-Royce Wraith, maybe even the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe, meaning a potential production version could be priced well in excess of £250,000.
Indeed, it’s notable that Mercedes-Benz has revealed the length of the concept car: at six metres, it dwarfs the mighty Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe at 5.6 metres, not to mention the Rolls-Royce Wraith at a ‘mere’ 5.2 metres.
More should become clear in the build-up to Pebble Beach, so stay tuned for more confirmed facts on the tantalising new Mercedes-Maybach coupe concept…
