Bentley’s new range-topping luxury SUV will be called Bentayga – and we’ll see the final production version before 2015 is out.
The unusual name, revealed at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, is inspired by the Roque Bentayga peak in the Canary Islands; add in its similarity to W.O. Bentley’s name and it became a natural fit.
Bentley isn’t issuing any images of the new 2016 Bentayga SUV at this stage, though. A close-up of the front wing vent is our lot for now.
Wolfgang Durheimer, Bentley Motors chairman and CEO, said: “Bentayga is a name that reflects what we know our SUV will do better than any other car in the world – combine the best automotive luxury with outstanding performance to take the Bentley experience to new environments.”
Set to go on sale in 2016, the Bentley Bentayga will be based on a variation of the next-generation Audi Q7 architecture; that’s also been revealed in final production form at the Detroit Auto Show.
Bentley says both on and off road performance will be “impressive” and the new Bentayga will “introduce Bentley’s renowned modern British luxury to limitless destinations”.
The new luxury SUV will be derived from the controversial Bentley EXP-9F that caused such as stir at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show – but it has, we hear, been given a substantial redesign since then…
