The revised 2015 Ford Focus ST will cost from £22,195, both for the carryover 250hp petrol engine and the new 185hp turbodiesel variant.
Ford’s price parity contrasts with Volkswagen’s Golf GTI and GTD rivals – the GTD is £500 cheaper than the GTI (and the power difference there 36hp rather than the Ford’s 65hp petrol advantage). Ford has, however, ensured there are no visual differences whatsoever between the two versions; the only giveaway will be the redline on the rev counter.
The Focus ST TDCi 185 is the first ever diesel Focus, and cuts emissions and fuel consumption to unprecedented lows: it emits 110g/km CO2 and averages 67.3mpg. The 2.0-litre Ecoboost 250 has improved to 41.5mpg and 159g/km CO2, but it’s still a long way off the new diesel.
Ford expect to pick up a significant number of fleet buyers with the hot new Focus ST diesel. Indeed, it’s likely the CO2 figure has been achieved with UK Benefit in Kind tax rules in mind…
Despite the diesel Focus ST’s best-ever fuel economy, it is still able to escape being the slowest-ever Focus ST. The original ST170 had a 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 133mph; the new ST TDCi does it in 8.1 seconds and can reach 135mph.
Of course, the petrol car shows it a clean pair of heels, with 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 154mph. This is no faster than before, but the driving experience itself has improved, says Ford.
Changes include all-new front springs and new dampers front and rear, recalibrated EPAS power steering, reinforced engine mounts and a new Michelin 19-inch tyre.
As before, there will be three variants; even the base ST includes Recaro seats, 18-inch alloys, DAB and air con. ST-2 costs £1500 more but adds LED running lights, part-leather Recaros, climate control and heated windscreen.
The ST-3 costs £1300 more than that, adding electric leather seats, SYNC2 infotainment, bi-Xenon headlights and red brake calipers hiding behind ‘Rock’ metallic alloys. All three trims and two engines are also available in Focus Estate guise, for an additional £1100 over the five-door hatch.
Ordering for the new Focus ST range is now open; deliveries are expected from February 2015.
