2014 Honda Civic Tourer priced from £20,265

Order books will open next month for the 2014 Honda Civic Tourer – and surprisingly, it’ll cost more than a Volkswagen Golf.

The entry-level 1.8-litre petrol will start at £20,265 – around £2,000 more than the base-spec Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf estates. But it beats them all for boot space.

Despite the 2014 Honda Civic Tourer being just 235mm longer than the hatchback, the manufacturer proves that it’s not size that’s important, it’s how you use it.

The resulting 624-litres of boot space not only thwarts its rivals, it also embarrasses cars from a segment up. Ford Mondeo? 537-litres. Vauxhall Insignia? 540-litres. Volkswagen Passat? 603-litres. Suddenly the Honda Civic Tourer looks excellent value.

The British-built Tourer will be available with a choice of two engines: a 1.8-litre i-VTEC petrol and a 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel.

The petrol comes with a choice of manual or auto ‘box, and offers 142hp, 45.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 149g/km.

The diesel on the other hand creeps in at 99g/km of CO2, with an impressive fuel economy figure of 74.3mpg. Its 120hp will accelerate the Civic to 60mph in 10.1 seconds.

The entry-level S model will come with Bluetooth, DAB radio and 16-inch alloys. The next grade up, the SE Plus (which starts from £21,950) features parking sensors and 17-inch alloys.

SR buyers (with a starting price of £24,350) get front heated seats, privacy glass and a trick adaptive damper system, while the top-of-the-range EX Plus (from £26,250) gets smart entry and start capability, blue ambient lighting and Bi-HID headlights with auto levelling.

The 2014 Honda Civic Tourer – the first Civic estate in 12 years – will be delivered in the UK from February.
