2018 Volkswagen Golf SV

Volkswagen has facelifted the Golf everyone’s forgotten about

2018 Volkswagen Golf SVThe Volkswagen Golf SV is like a normal Golf, only more people-carrier-ey. It’s a secret MPV, with more space and versatility than a regular hatch for five people, without looking like a bog, boxy, boring people carrier.

And we’ve all forgotten it exists.

To give us a nudge that this MPV crossover might still make sense for some, Volkswagen has facelifted it for 2018. There are new bumpers, LED rear lights and optional front LED headlights, smarter interior trim and the addition of VW’s fancy new smartphone-like infotainment systems.

Even the smallest Discover Navigation system is up to 8.0-inches, and the top-spec Discover Navigation Pro system is 9.2-inches, complete with a premium-spec pure glass front.

More intelligent driver assist tech includes Front Assist and Predictive Pedestrian Monitoring: the Golf SV can now tell when there’s a car stopped ahead, and when a pedestrian may step out in its way. If the driver doesn’t respond to either, the car will step in.

This technology is now hidden more neatly behind the VW roundel in the grille, rather than being untidily lashed into the lower air intakes.

What else is new? Two colours, Cranberry Red and Reflex Silver, and there are four new alloy wheel designs. Volkswagen’s fancy new 1.5 TSI EVO petrol engine is also now available, in 130hp and 150hp guise. Prices for it start from £23,095, for a TSI EVO 130 SE, while the Golf SV S range opens at £20,475 for a 1.0 TSI 85 S.

The bits that have always differentiated the Golf SV remain though, adds the firm: a higher seating position than a Golf hatch, a sliding rear bench seat, more rear legroom thanks to a wheelbase 50mm longer than the hatch, plus body length that fits it in neatly between the Golf hatch and Golf estate.

If our memory-jogger has you keen to find out more, you’re in luck: the new 2018 Golf SV range is now already on sale at Volkswagen dealers nationwide.
